Ask yourself this question: “Is there more to life than what I’m experiencing now?”
If the answer is “Yes” or “Probably”—read on!
Early on in my conversations with men I ask them: “Would you say you are languishing or flourishing?” They typically think for a moment and say something like: “Well, probably more languishing than flourishing.” No surprise there… you’re more likely to reach out to a therapist when things are in the realm of these symptoms:
- Blah!
- Lacking enthusiasm / motivation
- Foggy, unfocused thinking
- Feeling stuck
- Going nowhere / spinning your wheels
- Not engaged or passionate about work or life
They may also be experiencing issues with their relationship/s, work, unresolved stuff from the past, and more. They may be anxious or depressed, or ruminating—with negative thoughts going around and around in their heads.
Many of the men I see are in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, although all age groups are represented.
The thing they often have in common is a desire to “shine a light” on all this stuff, and are prepared to take the risk of sharing what’s going on in their life with a third person who is NOT a friend, partner, sibling, parent, or workmate!
We start a journey towards awareness. Awareness of what underlies the aspects of life contributing to those symptoms above. It just unfolds as we talk every couple of weeks or so.
And from awareness, we can move towards change, growth, responding differently.
It’s a process, not an event. Although we do have the odd “aha!” moment.
